Martha Cooper spent decades immortalizing a then misunderstood and illegal art form. His first book produced in 1984 with Henry Chalfant, Subway Art, is now called a Bible by the entire urban art community. To design Spray Nation, Martha Cooper and her historical editor Roger Gastman combed through hundreds of thousands of 35mm kodachrome tapes to sort and digitize them, achieving a titanic amount of work. The images range from obscure tags to intimate portraits, from action shoots to subway trains painted inside and out. This abundant iconography is accompanied by texts on Martha Cooper's methods of paying homage to a New York that has now disappeared.
